Also known as an arrow puzzle

A shape of tangled arrows. Send each line out the way it points, in an order that never gets stuck.

Lines: Every line has an arrow. Tap a line and it slides out of the shape, head first, the way its arrow points.

How to play

  1. Every line has an arrow. Tap a line and it slides out of the shape, head first, the way its arrow points.
  2. It only leaves when nothing stands in front of its arrow, all the way to the edge. Tapping a blocked line counts as a mistake.
  3. Work out which lines can go first and clear them one by one until the shape is empty. A hint shows a line that can go now.

First moves

Look along the arrow

Before you tap, follow a line's arrow with your eye all the way to the edge of the board. If any other line crosses that path, even far away, the line is blocked and a tap counts as a mistake. Only the head matters: the rest of the line follows it out.

Start at the rim

Lines near the outside of the shape, with their arrows pointing outward, usually have a clear path. Clear those first. Every line that leaves frees the squares it stood on, so lines further in start to get free paths of their own. Work from the outside towards the middle.

Follow the blockers

Stuck on a line you want gone? Find the first line in front of its arrow: that one has to leave first. If it is blocked too, follow its arrow in turn. Tracing this chain back always ends at a line that can leave now, and that is your next tap.

No wrong order

A line that can leave stays free: clearing other lines only opens up space, never closes it. So you cannot paint yourself into a corner by choosing the wrong free line first. The only mistakes are taps on lines that are still blocked, so check the path, then tap.

Origin

Lines is our own take on the arrow puzzle. Every board is a shape on a grid that the app fills with lines, straight or bent, each ending in an arrow.

From Easy to Expert the board grows, and the lines get longer, bend more often and block each other more. Before you see a board, the app checks that every line can leave.

Questions

Does every Lines puzzle have one solution?

Every board ends the same way, as an empty shape, and the app checks that you can get there before you see the board. The order is up to you: any order works, as long as you only tap lines whose path is clear.

What counts as a mistake?

Tapping a line that is still blocked. Tapping a line with a clear path never is, whatever order you take the lines in.
